Treats the biguanides possessing the expressed anti-hyperglycemic influence. The glucose index decreases both on an empty stomach, and after food. Insulin secretion does not increase, a pronounced hypoglycemic effect is not observed.
Inhibition of gluconeogenesis occurs, while the secretion of glucose in the liver decreases. The sensitivity of muscle structures to insulin increases, glucose utilization in peripheral tissues improves. The absorption of sugars in the intestine slows down.
The active substance stimulates the synthesis of glycogen inside the cells. Metformin improves lipid metabolism. The content of triglycerides and cholesterol decreases. With prolonged use in patients gradually reduced body weight.
The drug is available in tablets that are film coated.
The maximum concentration is observed 2 hours after taking the pill. Metformin accumulates in the liver, salivary glands, kidneys, muscles. Bioavailability and ability to bind to protein structures is negligible. The active substance is removed in about 6 hours with urine, unchanged. Metabolites are not formed.

How to take Mepharmil?
The initial dose for adults is 500 or 850 mg twice a day after eating. With the appointment of higher doses of 2 tablets of 500 mg can be replaced by one in 1000 mg. The maximum daily dosage should not exceed 3000 mg, which is divided into 3 doses.
The daily dose is not more than 1000 mg. If necessary, it can be increased to 2000 mg per day, divided into 2 doses. In some situations, the dosage can be reduced or increased (this is due to fluctuations in blood glucose levels).
Side Effects of Mepharmil
At the beginning of treatment, adverse reactions may occur in the form of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain. Most often, these symptoms go away on their own and do not require any therapy.
In addition, the drug causes such side reactions:
- metabolic disease;
- violation of taste sensations;
- lactic acidosis;
- decreased absorption and concentration of vitamin B12 in the blood;
- reactive hepatitis;
- abnormal liver function;
- skin rash with itching;
Urticaria is one of the side effects of taking the drug.
Most of these reactions go away on their own, but in certain situations it will be necessary to adjust the dosage or completely cancel the medication.
Influence on ability to operate mechanisms
Monotherapy with metformin does not cause the development of hypoglycemia, respectively, and does not entail a decrease in concentration. Vehicles can be controlled during therapy with this medicine, the reaction rate does not slow down.
Care must be taken when taking this medication with other hypoglycemic drugs because of the possibility of developing hypoglycemia, which affects concentration.
As a result of accumulation of metformin, lactic acidosis occurs. It manifests itself in the form of severe convulsions, dyspeptic disorders, asthenia. Caution should be observed in people with impaired kidney and liver. With any changes in health status, dose adjustment of the drug substance is necessary. Megaloblastic anemia and lactic acidosis often develop.
Care must be taken when using this drug in the elderly.
Combined use of vegan recipes and traditional medicine with metformin is possible, but only under strict medical supervision. Folk recipes help only to keep a positive effect from the therapy, but can not be its basis.
Use in old age
Care should be taken when using this drug in the elderly, because they are highly likely to develop hypoglycemia. It is necessary to monitor all changes in the results of tests in order to adjust the dose of the drug in time.
Appointment to children
Although there is no evidence that the active substance in any way affects puberty, but it is not recommended to prescribe the drug to children. This treatment is used only in exceptional cases after confirming the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.
Use during pregnancy and lactation
A greater risk for the fetus is identified in a pregnant diabetes, because because of it, some congenital anomalies can develop. However, the taking of Mefarmil tablets does not affect their aggravation. Treatment during gestation is possible only under the strict supervision of a physician with constant monitoring of blood glucose.
Taking Mefarmil tablets does not affect the future fetus.
Although the medication does not have any negative effect on the child, it penetrates breast milk in sufficiently large quantities, so for the period of therapy with a medical preparation it is better to refuse breastfeeding.
Use in violation of kidney function
With kidney pathologies, a constant dosage adjustment is required, taking into account fluctuations in blood sugar levels.
Use in violation of the liver
In chronic liver failure, dosage adjustment of the drug is needed. With a sharp deterioration in the results of liver function, the minimum effective dosage is prescribed. If it does not give a positive therapeutic result, it is better to refuse such treatment.
With a single dose of the drug over 850 mg of symptoms of hypoglycemia was not observed. Perhaps the development of lactic acidosis. This is an emergency that requires only inpatient treatment. Metformin and lactate can be removed from the body through hemodialysis.
Metformin and lactate can be removed from the body through hemodialysis.
Interaction with other drugs
Combined use with iodine-containing agents leads to the appearance of renal failure. Radiocontrast agents provoke the development of lactic acidosis.
It is advisable to use pills with caution with antihyperglycemic agents and sympathomimetics, as well as with nicotinic acid derivatives. In this case, you need to constantly monitor the level of glucose in the blood, adjust the dosage to reflect changes in general health.
Diuretics contribute to the development of lactic acidosis and lead to a strong decrease in renal function.
Compatibility with alcohol
By contacting fatty acids, ethanol provokes the development of lactic acidosis and leads to the development of liver failure. Therefore, the medical preparation is incompatible with alcoholic beverages.

Reviews of Mefarmile
Lyudmila, 45 years old, Arkhangelsk
For a long time I suffer from diabetes of the second type. Already tried many drugs, but they did not have a lasting effect. The doctor advised mepharmil to take pills. I was pleased with the result of the treatment. Taking the medicine does not cause any difficulties, because you do not need to prick injections, and this is convenient, especially for a working person. Drank pill and calm. I did not feel any side effects on myself.
Ruslan, 57 years old, Omsk
This medicine did not fit. Perhaps because he also took diuretics, but a strong dehydration of the body began. General condition deteriorated. The next day, convulsions began, a severe headache appeared, a stomach ache, all symptoms of intoxication developed. The doctor said it was my lactic acidosis. I had to change the drug.
Sergey, 34 years old, Samara
Recently, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. My weight is excessive, which was one of the causes of the disease. The doctor prescribed Mepharmil tablets. With diet and taking pills weight began to decline. Now it is important to keep it at normal levels. The general condition was also much better. Appeared more strength and energy. In addition, it is more convenient to take a pill than to make injections. While I am satisfied with the treatment with this medicine.
